Step 3: Fit Style Election

Your carrier fit style determines how your armor panels wrap around your body. This choice affects comfort, bulk, protection coverage, and cost. Review both options carefully before making your selection.

Overlap Fit

The traditional carrier fit. The wings of the front and rear panels are longer, extending far enough so the front and back wings overlap by 1–2 inches. This overlap is required to maintain 360-degree ballistic protection around the torso.

Pros

Lower cost
360° protection when properly fitted

Cons

Adds bulk — extra material layered at the sides
Carrier cannot be worn by another officer — sized to one individual
Less room for weight fluctuation or additional layers

Tactical Fit J5 Recommended

For this style, we utilize 2 pieces of armor in the cummerbund and shorten the wings of the carrier. The cummerbund armor wraps the sides, providing guaranteed 360-degree ballistic protection while reducing bulk and improving comfort.

Pros

More comfortable — significantly less bulk
Easier to re-utilize carrier if needed (reassignable)
Guaranteed 360° protection via cummerbund armor
Grows with the officer — accommodates weight gain, rain/snow layers

Cons

Higher cost (additional cummerbund armor pieces)

How Does This Affect My Order?

Your fit style determines how your panel widths are calculated from your body measurements. Overlap Fit produces longer panel wings that must overlap 1-2" at the sides. Tactical Fit produces shorter wings with separate cummerbund armor inserts. If your agency has a carrier configuration on file, the authorized fit type may already be set. If you are unsure which style to choose, contact J5 Rescue Supply or your agency armor program coordinator.
